The N.V.E.A. Remembers Arla Barkemeyer, DVM
Dr. Arla Barkemeyer with "Spencer" & "Skye"
"On Saturday, February 9, 2008 the veterinary community lost one of its most valued contributors to animal health care. Dr. Arla Barkemeyer passed away at her beloved cabin on the Dearborn River where she loved the serenity and quiet of Montana's back country.
Dr. Barkemeyer attended College at Washington State University graduating in 1973, and practiced veterinary medicine for over 30 years, and had a special interest in veterinary orthopedic surgery. Dr. Barkemeyer was a rare treasure of talent and compassion performing pro bono services for the Montana Fish & Wildlife Parks. She was also instrumental i n establishing a program through the Mikal Kellner Foundation to donate all of her clinic's euthanasia fees in order to create a fund to assist those pet owners whose pets require medical care beyond their financial ability. Dr. Barkemeyer had numerous pets of her own, and would often bring unwanted and rejected pets home with her, where they became a part of her ever growing family of 4-footed friends.
Dr. Barkemeyer loved gardening, and woodworking. But most of all, she was a committed advocate for animal health care, a consummate professional, a gifted veterinarian and an outstanding human being. She is survived by her son, Brian, and her daughter, Gwen. The entire global veterinary community has suffered an irreplaceable loss. All of us who knew Dr. Barkemeyer will miss her dedication to her clinics, Animal Center and Companion Animal Hospital, both located in Helena, Montana, and her tireless efforts to make veterinary care available to all creatures in need."

Animal Center of Helena believes that we can provide the best care for your pet by being able to prevent problems before they begin or soon after they are noticed. We strive to practice preventive medicine in order to minimize the risk factors associated with many diseases.
We believe that the annual, and sometimes bi-annual, physical exam, can be of greater importance than annual vaccines without an exam. By practicing this premise, we are able to minimize and slow the progression of many diseases which allows your pet to live a longer and happier life.
Animal Center of Helena offers both routine surgical procedures, like sterilizations, and more complicated procedures.
We work closely with a board certified, veterinary surgeon who brings his expertise to our hospital for more complicated cases.
All surgical patients undergo a preoperative exam and
pre-operative blood tests to evaluate anesthetic risks.
Animal Center of Helena has in-house blood chemistry and automated hematology analyzers which allow us to obtain immediate results in critical situations. We also utilize a local laboratory for more complete testing.
Computer tomography, commonly referred to as a 'CT' or 'CAT' scan, is an advanced technology which is very useful when looking at parts of the body such as the brain or spine. CT scans provide better differentiation of soft tissue than conventional x-rays, since the gray scale can be controlled by the technician. A contrast media (dye) can also be injected into the patient's bloodstream to further increase the differentiation of tissue. The CT scan also does not superimpose the bone over the soft tissue, as it is only looking at a slice of the body at a time.
Our professional staff of compassionate doctors, veterinary technicians, and administrative personnel are dedicated to helping your pet companions maintain a long, healthy and happy life.
